Getting Married?

If you are getting married in Jersey County, you need to obtain your marriage license at the Jersey County Clerk’s office.  Both parties must appear in person to make application, at least 24 hours, but not more than 60 days, before your wedding.  This must be done during office hours, and will take about 15 to 20 minutes.  Our office hours are Monday through Thursday 8:00AM to 4:00PM, and Friday 8:00AM to 12:00 noon.

Application Process:
Please review the Marriage License Application form and be prepared to provide all of the information on the form.  Completing and printing the form in advance will reduce the amount of time it takes to process your application.  Both parties will sign the form in the office, attesting to the information provided.  Valid ID is required.  It does not have to be a birth certificate.

The Marriage License fee is $35, payable by cash, check, money order, MasterCard, Visa, or Discover.  A $2 service fee is added to all credit/debit card transactions.

Age Requirement:
To be married in Illinois without parental consent, you must be at least 18 years of age.  If you are under 18, both parents must sign a parental consent form in the County Clerk’s office and have a valid Driver’s License or State ID for identification at the time you apply for your license.  If it is not possible for your parents to sign in our office, it may be done before the County Clerk in your parent’s county.  If a parent is deceased, a death certificate, proof of guardianship, or court order waiving consent must be presented.

Return of License:
The officiant of the ceremony must return the license to the County Clerk’s office within 10 days after the marriage date.  An envelope is provided for this purpose.  If for any reason you are not married, it will be your responsibility to return the license to the County Clerk for filing.  Under no circumstances should a license be destroyed after it is issued.
